At the beginning of the 17th century, the Sauerweins were first mentioned in documents on the upper Moselle. At that time, they came from Natters in Tyrol.
In the course of the generations, they always cultivated some wine, together with agriculture and additional work on the railways, handicrafts or administration. Matthias Sauerwein, Erwin Sauerwein's grandfather, was mayor of Palzem after 1945. He also founded the current company headquarters in 1924, now a large building surrounded by vineyards.
Edith and Erwin Sauerwein laid the foundation for today's winery, with their children Matthias, Tobias, Timo and Andreas. After Erwin's untimely death in 2016, their sons Matthias and Timo continue to run the winery.
From 2003 to 2018, the business ran under the name Weingut Sonenbuerg. Since 2019, we have returned to our family name, which is somewhat unconventional for winegrowers. Because we are the Sauerweins.
